About this celebration

In his 2017 historical essay, Glodzhevo-born Georgi Yanev describes the old three-day Petkovden gathering. Preparations began with cleaning homes and preparing meals for relatives from nearby villages and farther afield. Traders brought fruit leather, wooden vessels and toys to the square; after the family lunch, guests gathered for horo dancing. The final day was remembered for the large horo and the Kapan rachenitsa dance. Yanev recounts that until 1969 the gathering was outside the municipal building, and later outside the Cooperative House and cultural centre. He links Glodzhevo's declaration as a town in 2003 to the move to a town celebration on 30 May instead of the old Petkovden gathering.

Bulgarian original
