THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
Plovdiv grows around the hills above the Upper Thracian Lowland. In the IV century BC the Thracian settlement of Nebet Tepe was fortified under Philip II of Macedon and became known as Philippopolis. During the Roman era, the city was an important center of the province of Thrace; from that time are the Ancient Theater and other preserved city remains.
After Liberation Plovdiv is the center of Eastern Rumelia. On September 6, 1885, the Union with the Principality of Bulgaria was announced here. Later, the city developed as an industrial and cultural center; in 2019 it is the European Capital of Culture. Today, the ancient layers, the Old Town and the modern cultural life exist side by side.
