THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
The beginning of Ruse connects to a Thracian port on the Danube. At the end of the 1st century, the Roman fortress Sexaginta Prista became part of the Danube border of the empire; her remains are preserved in the city. In the Middle Ages, there was a settlement here, connected to today's Gyurgevo. From the 17th century, Ruse developed as a commercial center with an important port for connections between Central Europe and the Balkans.
In the 1860s, the city became the seat of the Danube Vilayet. Industrial plants and a railway appear. After the Liberation in 1878, Ruse acquired a European architectural appearance. The Danube Bridge, built in the 1950s, strengthened the connection with Romania. In the 1980s, environmental protests in Ruse became part of the civil movement preceding the democratic changes in Bulgaria. Today, the city remains a major Danube port and cultural center.
