THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
The oldest archaeological traces on the territory of Dobrich are from antiquity. In the early Middle Ages, an Old Bulgarian settlement briefly existed here. Today's city arose in the 16th century as Hadjioglu Pazardzhik. Located on the way to the lands beyond the Danube, it grew as an agricultural, craft and commercial center. In the 19th century, its annual fair attracted traders from the Ottoman Empire.
After liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, the city received the name Dobrich in 1882 in honor of the medieval ruler Dobrotitsa. In the first half of the 20th century, Southern Dobrudja was twice under Romanian rule; in September 1916, the battles known as the Dobrichta epic took place near the city. With the Treaty of Krai in 1940, Southern Dobrudja returned to Bulgaria. Today, Dobrich remains the administrative and cultural center of the district.
