THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
The Shumen fortress is the predecessor of today's city: there is a Thracian, Roman and medieval heritage on the hill. After the Ottoman conquest, Shumen developed as a military and economic center. During the Bulgarian National Revival, the city was distinguished by crafts, schools and cultural life; in 1856, the community center "Archangel Michael", today "Dobri Voinikov", was opened.
After Liberation, Shumen developed as a regional and cultural center. On the Shumen plateau in 1981, the memorial complex "Creators of the Bulgarian State" was opened - today one of the symbols of the city and a place that reminds of the early Bulgarian state.
