BULGARIA AS IT IS!
Babinden honours the woman who assisted at childbirth. Customs include pouring water over her hands, giving gifts and blessing children.

In the traditional village, the baba was the woman who assisted at childbirth and cared for mother and newborn. Babinden honours her and the women she helped become mothers. It has no direct Orthodox equivalent and its precise historical origin is unknown. Its rites express respect for skills and care on which family life once depended.
The baba was a trusted, experienced person who helped mothers and newborns when professional medical care was less accessible. The day recognises that knowledge and care. Bulgarian National Radio notes that Babinden has no direct church feast, although it stands beside Epiphany and St John’s Day in the winter calendar. This does not prove a precise pagan origin; it shows the layers of festive memory.
Mothers visit the midwife and pour water for her to wash her hands. They give her a towel and soap, and she blesses the children. In some places she visits the homes where she assisted births. A women’s gathering follows, with food, songs and joking. Settlements preserve their own variants.
The midwife may visit, bathe and bless children she helped deliver. Mothers then pour water over her hands and give a towel and soap. Women’s feasting and playful songs offered a rare public space for laughter in the old patriarchal society. These actions were recorded with local differences and should not become a rigid script for every village and era.
Babinden is celebrated on 8 January and, in some places, 21 January. The latter is also Maternity Care Day, honouring midwives and medical teams. The professional occasion and the old household custom share a theme but are different events.
Both 8 and 21 January remain in use. The modern hospital handwashing ceremony recalls the old domestic gesture, but has a different setting and participants. Local celebrations, for example in Razlog, preserve their own forms of respect for the baba and should not be presented as a universal model.
