BULGARIA AS IT IS!
Making and playing the gaida brings together craftspeople, musicians and students. UNESCO inscribed the transmission of this knowledge on its living heritage list in 2025.

The gaida is a wind instrument with a bag, a melody chanter, a drone sustaining a constant note and a blowpipe. Different types sound in different registers. It accompanies circle dances, festive meals, rituals and community gatherings, played alone or in groups.
Knowledge includes both instrument making and performance. Families and communities pass it on through observation, listening and practice. Today lessons also take place in community cultural centres, music schools and universities. Men and women both participate.
Gatherings, festivals and bagpipe groups let experienced performers meet beginners. UNESCO inscribed Bulgarian bagpiping and the transmission of its knowledge on the Representative List in 2025. The inscription concerns living practice, not simply the instrument itself.
