BULGARIA AS IT IS!
Round loaves and ring-shaped breads accompany family and calendar celebrations. Their shapes and decorations carry different wishes according to the occasion and local custom.

Bulgarian tradition includes special bread for births, weddings, calendar feasts and other important moments. Pita, pogacha and kravai do not mean the same thing in every region. Names, shapes and ways of distributing bread vary by occasion and local custom.
Dough decorations may depict ears of grain, birds, sun shapes or images of farming life. They express wishes for health and wellbeing rather than serving only as ornament. Ethnographic records show different symbolic meanings for different festive breads.
Kneading, shaping and sharing bread bring people around a common table. The skill is learned by participating and observing in the family. The National Ethnographic Museum has presented Christmas ritual breads from different regions, illustrating the richness of local variants.
