THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
In the area of today's Burgas there are traces of ancient settlements. A port settlement, also known as Pyrgos, is being formed by the bay. In the 19th century, it gradually developed as a city and commercial center.
Burgas was liberated from Ottoman rule on February 6, 1878. The Yambol–Burgas railway opened in 1890, and the modern port in 1903. In the 20th century, Burgas grew as an industrial and cultural center; today the sea, parks and museums remain part of its appearance.
