THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
Varna grew on the site of ancient Odessos, founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century BC. In Roman times, the city was an important Black Sea port - the Roman Baths have been preserved from this period. In 1866, the Varna–Ruse railway connected the Black Sea with the Danube.
After the Liberation in 1878, the city grew. In 1921, Varna was declared a seaside resort, and in 1972, the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis was discovered near it. Today, Varna combines the seaport, the resort and its rich festival life.
