THE TOWN AT A GLANCE
Sliven developed at the crossroads between Stara Planina and the Thracian Plain. On Hisarlukka hill are the remains of the late antique and medieval fortress "Tuida" - one of the places that tell about the earlier history of the city.
During the Bulgarian National Revival Sliven became a craft and educational center. In 1834, Dobri Zhelyazkov established a textile factory here. Today, the city preserves this industrial heritage through the National Museum of the Textile Industry, and the fortress and the Blue Stones remain among its most recognizable sites.
