BULGARIA AS IT IS!
Trifon Zarezan is a winegrowers’ celebration honouring St Tryphon. Ritual vine pruning and wishes for a good harvest are central to it.

The celebration’s name connects St Tryphon with vineyard work. Folk tradition centres on the first pruning, marking a new farming cycle and hopes for autumn grapes. Stories about the saint and the ritual have local versions; they do not establish a precise ancient origin.
The day brings together church remembrance of St Tryphon and the beginning of spring vine care. Bulgarian National Radio describes ritual pruning as a wish for a fertile year. Winegrowers and researchers sometimes connect it with a Thracian wine cult, but similar themes do not prove a continuous, precisely traceable origin. The recorded custom more reliably shows how saint, vineyard and labour meet.
Growers prune a few canes and wish for fertility. In some places wine is poured over vines, a king of the vineyards is chosen, and songs and a shared meal follow. Details vary locally. The ritual also rests on the everyday labour of people who tend vines throughout the year.
Pruning a few canes, giving a blessing and sometimes pouring wine on the vines turn work into a celebration. Choosing a king and sharing a meal make it communal. Real agricultural work stands behind the gesture: proper pruning, care and timing influence the crop much more than ritual. This does not diminish the tradition; it shows how hopes for a good yield are woven into annual labour.
The church feast of St Tryphon falls on 1 February in the new calendar. Folk Trifon Zarezan is often celebrated on 14 February in the old calendar, and some communities mark both. A date alone cannot describe all local traditions. Ritual pruning and wishes for a good harvest unite them.
The difference between 1 and 14 February comes from calendar change rather than two unrelated traditions. The Church celebrates on 1 February, while many places retain the old date of 14 February for pruning. Announcements may therefore name different days. Asking the local community when it visits its vineyards is more accurate than declaring one date the only authentic one.
